Here's some specs from Teac and Brier Technology brochures: Teac 3.5" embedded SCSI floppy drive ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- o Built-in SCSI interface reduce host computer loads o Built-in 30KB data buffer makes transfer rates up to 556KB/s possible o FD-235HS offers 2MB capacity and the FD-235JS, 4MB capacity o Single +5V DC power operation SCSI controller specs ----------------------- data buffer: 30KB terminator: mounted (removable) SCSI ID: SCSI ID = 0 (when shipped) Parity stop: On/Off possible (Off when shipped) Drive specs ----------------------- data transfer: 250Kb/s, 500Kb/s, 1Mb/s rotation: 300rpm or 300/360rpm (FD-235JS) average access time: 94ms track-to-track seek: 3ms settling time : 15ms motor start time : 480ms or less error rate : 10e-9 soft read, 10e-12 hard read, 10e-6 seek error General ----------------------- MTBF: 10,000 hours or more MTTR: 30 min or less Power requirements: +5V DC +- 10% (+12V DC supply unnecessary) Power consumption: .45W typical standby, 1.6/1.85W read/write (FD-235JS) Dimensions (WxHxD): 105x42x162mm (4.125x1.625x6.375in) =============================================================================== Brier Technology Flextra 3.5" 25MB embedded-SCSI floppy drive ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- o Twin Tier Tracking technology records precisely-positioned magnetic signal on a barium ferrite disk to indicate where data is recorded. This is crit- ical to STOR/MOR's high storage capacity o Embedded servo/voice coil actuator o Fast. Data access is on a par with fixed disks: average access time: 35ms track-to-track : 15ms rpm : 720 data rate : 1.25MB/s o Large data capacity: formats to 21.4MB o Error rate: 1 in 10e9 correctable, 1 in 10e12 uncorrectable o Dimensions (WxHxD): 4.000x1.625x5.750in The drive is sold to OEMs in large quantity only. Q/Cor of Norcross, GA is packaging the 25MB Flextra 3020 in internal ($849), external ($995), and PS/2 ($1195) subsystems with everything necessary to plug and play with IBM PC com- puters. Additional disks are $30 each. =============================================================================== Addresses: Teac Corp Teac Deutschland GmbH Data Storage Division Arzbergstr. 10 D-8036 Musashino Center Bldg. The Insite drives will be manufactured in Japan by an un-named company. The question of licensing the floptical drive and em- bedded servo disk technology to Japanese companies was only answered by the statement that Insite is preparing to make an announcement sometime in May.
