Hello! I could have the chance to get (for free or very cheap) an ESDI disk drive, and was wondering whether such a beast can be connected to an Atari ST (I have an ST1040). I know that there are SCSI adapters for the ST, but are there any ESDI adapters? I am quite hardware-ignorant, and have never programmed a disk drive but would be willing to do it if I can get a cheap, huge disk! Thanks in advance. The adapter is an Emulex MD-21 ESDI <--> SCSI adapter card. This baby cooks...... The driver I use the the Supra V2.6 driver selecting the 'other' for controller and disk type. Works fine, however I can only use 190 megs of the disk for TOS. The rest I have written some special code to use as archiving and other stuff. And as some drives already use an ADAPTEC 4070 or 4000 controller to convert SCSI to ST506, this may be a feasible solution. I'd contact ICD or Supra and find out whether there boards support the ADAPTEC 4525. I do know for a fact that they support 4000/4070. Let me know how this goes ........ It has the advantage that there is a jumper which allows it to mimic the 4000 controller to some extend. This jumper will allow it to work with most of the standard ST harddisk drivers, partition software etc. In order to get this to work you'll need something to go from ACSI (on the DMA port) to SCSI. I use a BMS 200 from Berkeley microsystems for that. They also sell the 4525, and are quite helpful. As stated before ICD and Supra also offer ACSI<->SCSi adaptors, and maybe also 4525 adaptors. I've never done business with them. I believe a BMS 200 with adaptec 4520 (2 boards) was something between $250,-- and $ 300,--. Comes with the cabling. You'll have to supply the power supply, disk and housing, and to assemble the stuff. Not too difficult. Good luck! -- Frans Meulenbroeks (meulenbr@prl.philips.nl) Centre for Software Technology

Shahood writes: ------------------------------------------------------------------ Document: ESDI.DOC Author: Paul W. Shahood Date: October 7, 1988 I have been using ESDI hard drives on my Mega and 1040 computers for over 4 months now and have had absolutely no problems with the hardware or software described in this document. I assume NO responsibility for any loss and/or damage of or to hardware or software as a result of attempting this project. Sorry, I hate it when I say things like that. Attaching ESDI drives (which appear to be more and more abundant these days) to your Mega or ST computer is actually quite straight forward. Using the same techniques set forth in the documentation supplied with your ICD ST Host Adapter, however, you should substitute the following: 1) Rather than using the ST506 controller (ie. Adaptec 4000 or XEBEC 1410, etc.) use an Adaptec 4520. This controller is a SCSI to ESDI Controller. 2) Use the OLDER CCS formatter from ICD as the controller formatting module (I have included it in this ARC with the name CCS4520.FMT. I suggest you keep it named this way so you can have both around). This module will work fine with then new formatting program (ICDFMT.PRG) - BUT the new CCS.FMT will NOT work with the 4520. Hardware: Assemble the hardware as you would with the ST506 type interfacing. All cables and connections are the same. The ONLY jumper you should have installed on the Adaptec 4520 is the one connecting G-H. Note: if you have the 4520 document, what I have just stated CONTRADICTS what the manual attempts to explain about this jumber relative to 4000 compatibility. Save yourself the grief and do it this way! I have tried just about all possible combinations of jumper settings and software drivers - this works.... Software: Install your drive and its parameters into the ICDFMT.DAT file. I have included the one that I use in this arc and it has two entries for the 4520 controller. One is set up for 17 sectors and the other is set up for 34 sectors (I have both types of drives). Note: There are also a couple of new drives that I have added to this data file other than ESDI drives so it differs from ICD's version a little. Now just format and partition your drive as you normally would using your drive designator and one of the 4520 controllers. Conclusion: As I have said, I have been using this setup for quite a while and it all works as advertised. The two types of drives are 80meg Hitachi and 130meg NEC's.
