[comp.sys.atari.st] Software Compatibility Poll

whitcomb@aurs01.uucp (Jonathan Whitcomb) (05/25/91)

Hullo, folks!

I have long been frustrated that I haven't been able to find a
good list of software that works or doesn't work on this version
or that version of TOS. I have been considering upgrading to
a new machine, but I want to know which programs will be able
to jump platforms with me.

Therefore, I am going to attempt to compile a list of ST/TT
software that Net readers have had experiences with on
different platforms. I will post the results.

Please cut out the form at the bottom of this posting and return it
to me filled in with data about specific ST/TT software that
you know works or doesn't work on various Atari computers.

I want to try to limit the scope of entries so that this doesn't get
out of hand. It probably won't do many people much good to know
that you have 47 games that all run on TOS V1.0. It would be useful
to list the 16 of these that don't run on the STE. I'm not really
interested in old programs that aren't available any more, or
programs you don't use. I especially don't want information
about programs that you cannot _personally_ verify will run
or not run on the systems you specify. Don't quote from friends
or magazine articles. I want _your_ experiences.

In order to make the list as simple and managable as possible, I
need the following information on each program:

Title/Version: This field should contain the title of the program,
and the version number or release date. Use a slash character
to separate the title and version. I only want one version
per title... use the most recent one you have.

Type: I want to give a broad classification to each program, followed
by a code indicating if the program is commercial or not. The
classifications should use the following codes:

	  acc: Desk Accessory
env: Environment (command shells, alternate desktops, emulators)
	  game: Gender Altering Mind Envelope...er...Game.
	  grph: Graphics (art, drawing, CAD)
midi: Midi (Sequencer, Notation, Patch Editor)
text: Word processor, DTP, database, etc.
	  util: Utility
app: Application (none of the above)

Compatibility/Incompatibility: Indicate which version of TOS you
have noted compatibility or incompatibility with. Use
	these letter codes for each:

	A: TOS V1.0
	B: TOS V1.2 ("Mega TOS")
	C: TOS V1.4 ("Rainbow TOS")
	D: TOS V1.6 (1040 STE)
	E: TOS V2.nn (Mega STE)
F: TOS V3.nn (TT) All resolutions
G: TOS V3.nn (TT) ST resolutions only

Examples:

Title/version Type Compat Incompat
==================================================================
Wowterm/2h app A,D
Spud Writer Professional/(10-89) text B,D E
Daily Fat Intake Counter acc B C
Speedzotz 1000 game B D
NoiseGronker/4.6 midi A,B D,E,F,G

I know these codes are cryptic, but I anticipate a large response,
and I'd like to be able to manage the data. I will sort out
the data and try to make a more presentable report later.
