Hello everyone! I've never used a modem before. Thus, I do not know much about it. Would anyone so kind tell me what kind of modems do I need for my Atari 1040ST, and also what communications software (names) do I need to run that modem? Thank you. An amateur Hien Le

More will be expensive, less is too slow, but 2400 is just correct. Communication software is a very simple thing, just reading from RS232 and displaying on screen and reading from keyboard and sending to RS232. So, terminal programs use to give a lot of other features, like RS232 configuration, automatic dialing (most modems can do this so the software simply has to send a string to the modem to dial a number), capturing (writing everyting that was sent and received into a file) and many, many more. My favourite terminal prg is Rufus, a German produkt with a nice user interface and many features. Another one is Uniterm which also gives a lot of features. Try to get one of these, connect your modem and off you go. It's really easy, all you need is the phone number of a nearby mailbox (BBS). Be sure to set the communication parameters to 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit (usually written 8N1), this will do for almost all BBSs. Most BBSs support 2400 baud and are able to determine what speed you are using so there is no need to care about this, even if the BBS supports 9600 baud or something like this. Have fun!
