I hold the late Swiss pianist Edwin Fischer to be an outstanding Schubert interpreter. He is considered by many to be the Mozart interpreter of the century, and some unsurpassed recordings of his playing of Bach, Mozart (5 piano concerti), Brahms and Beethoven (esp. the 5th Concerto with Furtwangler) are available -- mainly in Europe. I don't happen to have with me his Schubert discography, though I could dig it out for people who ask (via mail). The only recording of his playing Schubert that comes to my mind right now is his accompanying the young Elisabeth Schwartzkopf in some Lieder (see below). Fascinating, to say the Liszt. While on the subject of Lieder, I also mention a record of Bruno Walter accompanying Kathleen Ferrier (the unique!)... Here are a couple of entries of interest, the first of which with Schnabel -- probably the one Greg Paley mentioned in his article, and the last two -- the Fischer and Walter (last because they are not strictly just piano music). Sonates #18 D.850, #21 D.959, #22 D.960/ Artur Schnabel/ 1939, 1937, 1939/ Electrola C 147-01557 Impromptus #2-3 D.899/ Dinu Lipatti/ 1950/ EMI 1C19753780 Wanderer Fantasie C-Dur D. 760, Sonata a-moll D. 845/ Maurizio Pollini/ DDG 2530 473 (S) Lieder/ E. Schwartzkopf, E. Fischer/ EMI 2C 251-00404 (C) Lieder/ K. Ferrier, B. Walter/ 1949/ Decca 6 BB 197-8 (The last record includes also songs of Schumann and Brahms with both Ferrier and Walter, as well as more popular songs, in which Ferrier is accompanied by Ernest Lush (?)). People interested in exchanging information on historical recordings in general are welcome to send me mail to that effect. --Michel (Uucp: cornell!mf ; ARPA: mf@cornell)
