[comp.sys.amiga] DMA hard disks

spencer@well.UUCP (Randal Spencer) (11/25/86)

So what does all this mean? I am not thinking really hard about getting a
DMA hard disk because as I understand it, if I want to load a program into
fast memory I am not going to be able to do it using DMA anyway! Is this
not true? Maybe it could be DMA'ed into the chip_memory, and then be
moved by the CPU to fast_memory, without having to worry about the interrupts.
Is this true?

More important than this is, if DMA _is_ important even if you _don't_
care about loading data in for real-time stuff (like loading sounds while
the sound chip is playing the old data, or loading animation objects), than
is the C-LTD board DMA? Not at that price I would think not. But the PAL jr.
is not available with a developer discount. The MicroBotics _can't_ be
DMA, and that leaves who? ASDG? Do they have a DMA hard disk coming out?
Does anyone else? I just can't afford $1500 and was about to plunk down
the $995 (or so, love that Amiga credit card) and get the C-LTD SCSI
board and drive. Isn't this going to be a fine disk for programming with?

It still passes the bus don't it?

no, you're thinking of the amiga custom chips' DMA channels, which
are limited to CHIP memory. an outboard DMA channel would not be so
limited. even without a disk drive, an outboard DMA channel might be
useful for FAST to CHIP (and vice versa) ram transfers.

why not? how much does DMA add to the cost? $50?
