i'm very interested in networking amigas; the application i have in mind practically demands some degree of IBM compatibility. here's the $10,000 question: can i drop an IBM-style Ethernet card into a sidecar and run amigas as netBIOS-compatible worksta- tions? this would open up a whole new world of software and hardware to my application. my alternatives are 1) going all Amiga, which means lots of custom stuff (when was the last time you saw a real-time data acquisition pkg for the critter?) and 2) going all clone, which loses multitasking, large linear memory space, and class. and here's an idea which i give away for free, since the develop- ment would be--well, let's say a little messy: if you had a mul- titasking machine which has the aforementioned large linear ad- dress space, and it could use a high-powered processor like the 68020...can you say "network server?" i knew you could. problems: hard disk availability, lack of acceptance in major network markets. but fun. anybody wanna comment? feel free to post, the last time i asked this style of question i got only a few (but very good) responses. rick wayne rick@crys.wisc.edu
