[comp.sys.amiga] DBW vt100 v2.3 running on custom screen

wtm@neoucom.UUCP (Bill Mayhew) (12/09/86)

Hi Group,

Here's one that I haven't seen discussed yet. I've been running
vt100, version 2.3 on a custom screen (as specified in vt100.init)
so that I could pop it behind my workbench screen when desired. I
noticed that sending it behind by either clicking on the gadget or
else pressing leftamiga-N results in a rather peculiar looking
display, although the machine doesn't crash. If you can manage to
grab a fragment of one of the drag bars and move one of the screens
a bit, things will usually suddenly return to a normal display of
the screens and windows.

It looks like one of the pointers in the window structure isn't set
quite right, although I haven't had the time to see which one it is
yet. Note that in order to get at the screen drag bar, you've got
to move the vt100 screen down a tad, and this seems to be the point
where the bug creeps in; after that the mouse must be positioned
above the actual screen locations of the menu items and gadgets in
order to select them.

Its hard to describe in words what happens, but try it and you'll
see what I mean right away. Repeat by putting SCREEN CUSTOM in the
apropriate position in your .init file.

Fortunately, this bug is only an annoyance and doesn't really
affect the operation of any of the programs and does not crash the
machine (at least it hasn't yet!!).

Yep, I've got the same bug here. I mentioned it a few months ago
but there wasn't any discussion about it. I had trouble describing
the problem.

Even before I described the problem someone mentioned that he
noticed that the mouse pointer's "hot spot" (I hadn't heard it
called that before but quickly figured out what he meant) isn't
where you'd expect it to be. Instead of being able to drag the
window with the tip of the arrow, you have to use the middle of
the arrow. I think this is somehow related to the strange results
one can get when looking at the WB screen behind the VT100 screen.

There is also something funny that goes on at the bottom of the
screen when playing with the top of the screen. I haven't the
foggiest (yet) of what is going on with the screen/window/pointer.

One of these days, I'm really going to go through that book about
the Amiga and learn ...

Damn. Right after posting that I had the same bug with VT100 2.3
screens, I tried to duplicate the problem and couldn't. I could
swear that I had the problem with VT100 2.3 before. Maybe I wasn't
on WB 1.2 which I am now. Also I am now using a CUSTOM screen with
2 bitplanes. For a while I was just using a WORKBENCH screen.

If this posting makes no sense, it's because it's late. I got bit
by the 50% rule and had to repost and cut out a lot of pertinant
test.

BTW I have inserted the patches for the '.' acting like 'Amiga-.'
and they work great. I haven't put in the patches for the cursor
keys 'cause I haven't hit any problems with them yet.

This is most likely an Intuition bug, because it (and inconsistencies in the
positioning of the mouse pointer, which can make it hard to select the
right menu), disappear under 1.2.

Guess what? I finally am running VT100 V2.3 on WB V1.2 R33.47
(Also known as V1.2G I think), and I no longer have the funny
problems with the CUSTOM screen or with the mouse pointer's
hot spot.
