[comp.sys.amiga] Need information on implementing a SCSI interface.

miner@ulowell.UUCP (Richard Miner) (01/02/87)

I would like to build a DMA SCSI board for my Amiga. The DMA issue on the
Amiga is not a problem, we have already built an Image Processor that does
DMA read/writes. What I need is some documentation on SCSI interfaces.

Is there a definitive document that I can get, or can someone point me to
some articles? This is more for an academic project than for a marketable
product; I will probably make the schematics for the final board available
somehow.

HAL hears the Amiga9000 series is not selling. "Please explain Dave. Why
aren't Amiga9000's selling?" Bowman hesitates, "You aren't IBM compatible."

The definitive document is ANSI X3.131-1986 Small Computer System
Interface. I think it costs about $25 and is available from:

		ANSI
		1430 Broadway
		New York, NY 10018

Also check with some of the SCSI controller chip manufacturers (e.g.
Hitachi or NCR).

The new SCSI standard has been recently released by the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI). I have worked with this spec. to
implement the firmware for an intelligent SCSI host adapter. It covers
the mechanical, electrical, and functional requirements for SCSI.

To order: send $25.00 (includes shipping etc.) to

          American National Standards Institute
          1430 Broadway
          New York, N.Y. 10018

request the : American National Standard for SCSI
                           doc. # ANSI X3.131-1986

                                              good luck!

There is also a book that is (in my opinion) a little more readable
than the ANSI document. It's "The SCSI Handbook" by a group called
ADSI (as I recall). Last time I saw it, it was about $20 or so.

Unfortunately, I didn't pick up a copy when I first saw it at Computer
Literacy Bookshop here in Sunnyvale ... about the middle of last year.
I've been waiting for them to get some more in, but I just checked with
them ... they were just informed by the distributor that the book is
already "out of print" (sigh).

Worth checking at technical bookstores to see if you can find a copy.

Good luck!

There is a very good article about implementing a SCSI-interface written
by Steven Ciarcia in his recommended HW-column "Ciarcia's Circuit Cellar".
This article was in May and June 1986 BYTE.

ADSI no longer stocks the "SCSI GUIDEBOOK" according
to a fellow at ADSI.

Also, their new telephone number is (714) 863-0102.

Their new phone number is 714-863-0102, however their Literature Dept.
told me that this publication is no longer available (sigh).

I ordered that book a couple of months ago. Our book-purchasing people
responded that it is out of print. My local SCSI guru checked and said they
were right. He then used a contact at a SCSI chip vendor to locate a
copy for me on the chip vendor's shelves. If I've been mis-led, please
let me know as we could use a few more copies of the book for new folks
around here.
