[comp.sys.amiga] Networking ..... Info needed

msg@dciem.UUCP (Marc Grushcow) (01/12/87)

Line eater??...oh Line eater??

This is my first posting... please forgive if I screw up.

I am in the process of writing a functional spec for a for a large system
that will run in a scientific environment. The Amiga fills a good part of
the bill (graphics, sound, multi-tasking, etc.) but as usual, there is one
major problem. The desired configuration would consist of a bunch of Amigas
connected to a VAX running VMS. Data transfer requirements along with some
others dictate a network solution.

Now, ideally I'd like to run standard DECNET but I'm not about to spend
megabucks reinventing it for the Amiga. Some type of Ethernet i/f is more
likely. I've seen ads for ethernet cards for the Amiga. Does anybody have
experience with any of these? What protocols do they support? I can get
TCP/IP from DEC for $15K which is out of sight, but I think that I can build
an enhanced UDP/IP that could run on both the Amiga and the VAX. For
development, I'd want to keep shared files (.h etc.) on the VAX and transfer
them to the Amigas "manually" when updates are made, so I need some type of
file transfer capability.

                              HELP!!

Thanks in advance.
