[comp.sys.amiga] MED Comments

hsgj@batcomputer.UUCP (01/27/87)

You've got to hand it to Matt Dillon for the great profusion of interesting,
useful, and !free! Amiga software. I just tried out MED (for about an
hour). Some brief comments:
He didn't lie; it scrolls FAST.
Quite small (circa 28K). Considering that CBM's ED (what?,
you've never used it either?) is 20K, Med's size is good.

Le bug:
1) Every time I run it, it steals 864 bytes of FAST Memory. Nothing else
is running in my system except for a newcli, from which MED is started.
I do Avail, Med, Avail. Each time, FAST In Use is less 864 bytes. CHIP
Mem is unaffected. Note that my MicroBotics 2Meg is not using any driver
or ram disk or any other potential memory trasher. The problem is also
not a device or lib being loaded once, because EVERY invocation sucks down
the memory. I have Wb 1.2g if that helps...

Minor bugs that can probably be fixed in 5 minutes:
1) When you put the mouse arrow on either top or bottom border of the
window, and click the left (select) button, it scrolls half a screen.
This is good. The "bug" is that the current line number indicator in
the title bar is not updated. Eg if you were on line 100 and scrolled
in this fashion, the line indicator remains at 100 until you press the
UP or DOWN arrow keys. Then it jumps to the (accurate) 112 (or whatever).

2) The CLE command line doesn't understand caps. This could be a feature.
I tried typing in UP just for example, and it was Unknown. 'up' of course
worked fine.

PS: I don't have the source because it hasn't made it here yet, I
don't have mylib.lib, and the copyright said not to modify it. So I am
merely submitting these notes for the public interest.

In sum, it's pretty nifty. No doubt someone will write some keydefs
so I can emulate emacs, me being too lazy to learn new tricks.

I'll fix all the bugs and repost in a couple of days (In case any
more bug reports come in). Thanks for the bug reports!
