[comp.sys.amiga] Deluxe Paint II bug

lwall@sdcrdcf.UUCP (01/28/87)

Can you believe it? I actually found a bug in DP2.

Repeat By:
Save whatever it is you are currently working on in DP2, 'cuz
you'll lose it. Having a picture up may give you a more interesting
crash. Click one of the predefined square brushes with the right
button in order to resize it. While you are resizing it (with the
right button) push the pointer up into the menu bar.

Result: either a dead screen or everlasting fireworks. In any event
the only way out is to reboot, seemingly.

The fireworks crash is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Seemed to have
a cycle time of about 2 seconds, flashing up a continuously changing mishmash
of something that looked a little like my old picture after traveling through
a meat grinder. What'd it do, write an endless loop of garbage over the
copper list?

Oh, one thing does survive on the screen. The

	S
	I
	Z
	E

sprite stays wherever it was, but the mouse can no longer move it.

I've got another one, and this one is worse. Rubber-band lasso crashes with
fireworks whenever the lasso is too complex or too large. This may be just
(ha -'just'!) a memory problem. But you can never tell when it's going
to happen, so I just don't use that feature. But it was one of the prime
things I REALLY wanted from DPII! Oh well...

I just received the upgrade yesterday, and after an hour I got it
to crash. I was playing with stencil, clicking many colors then
"make", and it hung. (alas, no fireworks).

The side of the shipping package reads:

                     2510
            DPNT II UPGRD-AMI PROT

Perhaps the "PROT" means not "PROTected" but "PROTotype"!

I have a bit of a clarification and workaround for the DP II
push-brush-into-menu-bar bug: DP II crashes whenever the second point of
the rectangle (of the brush you're resizing) goes ABOVE the first point.
The workaround is, of course, not to do this. The menu bar is not really
involved in the bug.
Also the circle brush doesn't seem to have this problem - it works fine no
matter where you drag the mouse while resizing it.
Only the rectangle brush seems to have the bug.

Summary: When resizing rectangle brush, start at the top-left corner
and drag DOWN to the bottom-right to avoid crashes. ('course the crash is
kinda pretty sometimes...)
