[comp.sys.amiga] Query: Scientific Word Processing

pja@psuvm.bitnet.UUCP (02/09/87)

I am looking to purchase a microcomputer system for
scientific word processing, and would like some
information on what's available for the Amiga.
What software exists for the Amiga?
How about nroff/neqn type formatters?
I understand that TEX has been ported to the Amiga.
Does anyone have the address of the company that
did the port? Anyone used it; have any comments?

Here's the basic scenario:

I want to purchase a micro, a printer, and a word
processor, specifically to write a doctoral
dissertation and research papers in Astronomy.
The printer will be an inexpensive dot matrix type
for draft copies, e.g., a Toshiba 321. Final
copies will be transfered to another system which
has an HP LaserJet printer. Requirements for the
word processor are:

1)It must handle equations and special symbols in
a reasonable manner (I've got lots of equations).
2)It must have drivers for a dot matrix printer,
and also for the LaserJet with J (math) font
   cartridge.
3)It should be able to route output to a file
for later transfer to another computer.
4)It should include a good spelling checker (this
could, of course, be a seperate piece of software).

It would be very desirable to have:

 5)A grammar checker.
6)Definable characters (Astronomers need some pretty
   special symbols).

Please respond to me at pja@psuvm.BITNET.
Thank you for your time.
