I am angered at the shrinking number of Country Music radio stations in the New York area. WKHK here in New York just went off the air and I am furious!! I came into work on a Monday and their playing marshmellow/bubble- gum music like Barbara Streisand, Barry Manilow, and Bee Gees stuff. There is no justice in the world.

I felt exactly the same way when WRVR, one of the best jazz stations I ever heard, switched mid-day into WKHK! I am only sad to see that once WKHK failed, that some decent jazz didn't come back. In any case, I'm glad it's gone! -- David Sullivan, WA1TNS UUCP: ...!floyd!cmcl2!acf4!sullivan (212) 460-7287 ARPA: SULLIVAN@NYU New York University

KHK used to be *W*R*V*R* -- the best jazz station in the city -- and almost the only one. OPINION: Most of what is aired on ``country'' stations is drivel fit only for flatworms. The stuff RVR played was easy to call art, even when you didn't understand it. The trash that is called country claims (implicitly) to derive from indiginous musicks. It does not. You have nothing to complain about, you who mourn KHK. KHK was a brothel built on the ruins of a temple. But I agree that even a brothel attracts better clientel than a trash dump. References: hou5d.823 Let's be quick to separate, however, traditional Appalachian folk music, bluegrass, and so on, from that overglossified and maudlin crap that is allegedly ** Country ** music . I really can't understand (i.e. it blows my mind) why people LIKE listening to stuff which is so damn depressing. Today's " I went down to the liquor store, and saw a woman in a truck which was sleeping with my sister's husband..." crap ? Move to North Carolina, we have more country stations per capita than any place in the world......<probably>. Take some of them back with you. David

x <-- USENET insecticide Country music DRIVEL!?!?!? Eat tasty death, you unAmurrikan wimp! But seriously... Bad country is just as bad as any bad music (Conway Twitty will be crucified next to Paul Anka and Richard Strauss). Country music is intensely commercial, ergo the shit floats to the top. But GOOD C&W has the following characteristics: 1. It uses MELODY - something not in vogue among (even my favourite) current rock and ``classical'' composers. 2. It is sincere. 3. It is indegenous. Buy a record sometime called ``sleepless nights'' - it features Gram Parsons and the young Emmylou Harris and if some of the vocal harmonies don't turn yer heart to water then you ain't got one. Or anything by George Jones. ``Ever since my masochistic baby left me, I got nothing to hit but the wall...''

AH, yes, some of my favorite C&W lyrics: "I was drunk the day that Mother got out of Prison" "Get your tongue out of my mouth when i am kissing you goodbye" "Dead Skunk in the middle of the Road" "She got the goldmine and I got the Shaft" "She can put her shoes under my bed anytime" "If I said that you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?" And I am sure that there are more... these are just from the bottom of my mind. Walt Pesch AT&T Technologies ihnp4!ihuxp!wbpesch
