[comp.sys.amiga] The Potential of the 2000 -- Plea for MMU

While we're on the topic:

I'd like to see an MMU on-board. [ This is my Unix pampering talking! ]
While the 'Guru' is an interesting concept - it doesn't match the desirability
of a system that says Memory Exception, and doesn't need to REBOOT. [ or
ripple - for you IBM'ers out there ] Certainly, non-computer people look at
this and think the computer is botched!

The 68030 chip won't need an MMU, I see that. But the 68020 card I HOPE gets
an MMU! For one thing, to be compatible with the '030.
The performance penalty of an MMU isn't bad enough to leave it out.
AmigaDOS currently doesn't support an MMU so it would have to have some, new,
O.S. But, it will have to go in eventually to satisfy demand.

A1000 upgrade would be interesting. If Commodore puts out a system with a
'simple' MMU, as has been rumored, this could be done with the A1000. But
will that MMU be compatible with the '030? It might be a waste of effort, if
you can't turn off the MMU section of the '030. From what I have heard, a
few companies have gone with custom MMU's. And Motorola has tried to please its
customers - maybe they never will on this issue.
