[comp.sys.amiga] R.J in San Diego

R.J. Michael spoke at the San Diego Amiga Users Group Tuesday, April 7th.
I suppose you all read about his visit to the Boston Computer Society
last month, so I won't tell you the whole story again, but there were
some interesting parts.

The overall impression after hearing the "Amiga story" was one of
sorrow. It seems like such a waste that after this Amiga team created
this unparalled achievment in the home computer market, they were disbanded
because of the politics of Commodore. Like R.J. said, Commodore doesn't
understand the Amiga. The only good thing Commodore did was actually
bringing the Amiga to the marketplace.

R.J. said that the Los Gatos's new Amiga was a true next - generation
machine, with "modular components" and the like, but it would have taken
an extra year to build. That fact, combined with the "if it wasn't made
here, it must not be that good" mentality lead Commodore to go with
the German A2000 design. Great.

R.J. also showed several "Amiga commercials" they did as a joke for the
2nd ("and probably last") developers conference. Everyone from Bartles &
Jaymes to "Joe Commodore" (Joe Isuzu) was selling the Amiga. Really funny
stuff. He also talked about the final party held last weekend at Los
Gatos. Seems they had a casket open with a bunch of old Amiga hardware
in it. Jay read Mark Anthony's famous "we come to bury Commodore, not
to praise them" speech. R.J. said there was a sort of solemn undertone,
everyone realizing that it was really over.

R.J. said Commodore projects sales of the A500 to be 250-500K the first
year alone. Apparently when R.J. heard this, it "inspired" him to
get going on his long-awaited awesome EA game.

Another interesting tidbit R.J. mentioned was that a few from Amiga might
re-write AmigaDOS on their own, making it faster and with all new commands.
It would be compatible with the current AmigaDOS disks, but would
write in this new, fast format. Please guys! Do it!!! :-)
