[comp.sys.amiga] 16.32 MHz 68010 upgrade?

robinson@renoir.Berkeley.EDU (Michael Robinson) (05/10/87)

Ok, so I was thinking again (you would've thought I would've learned my
lesson last time, but noooo..).

So what I was thinking was that, this being summer, as a summer project
I could more than double the speed of my Amiga.

The idea I have is to wirewrap up a daughter board to plug into the
68000 socket that will have a 68010 and a clock to drive it at 16.32 MHz.
My plan is to get a 64-pin wire-wrap socket for the 68010, and a small
piece of perfboard. First, stick the 64-pin socket into the perfboard
and glue it in. Then, bend up the CLK pin and insert the 68010 into the
socket. Lastly, by tapping into Vcc and GND (available underneath the
board at the wirewrap pins), construct a clock on the perfboard, and tie
the output to the clock pin (which would be sticking in the air). Finally,
yank out the 68000, and plop in the Frankenstein Board (for the lack of
a better name).

Now is there anything blatantly stupid that I am missing? Are 68010's
available at 16.32 Mhz? If so, where can I get them? Will I need to
(as I suspect) synchronize my clock with the Amiga system clock, so they
are in phase? Is it impossible to double the speed of the processor
simply by doubling the signal available at CLK?

Assuming the above would work, I would then need to get some fast ram.
My budget restricts the ram expansion to the Squeeze ram. Will the
Squeeze ram work with such an arrangement?

If you have the answers to any of the above questions, I would very much
appreciate it if you could send them to me via email. I will, of course,
summarize the responses to the net.

Thank you.
