[comp.sys.amiga] LA SCAN Amiga Show

papa@uscacsc.UUCP (Marco Papa) (05/21/87)

Last weekend we went to the Los Angeles SCAN Amiga Show at the LA Shrine
Theater. The show was rather nice, considering that it was not organized
by a big organization, but by the Southern California Amiga Network of
Amiga User Groups. The turnout was good, comparable to the Commodore
Show LA of last September. These are some of the interesting things I can
report:

- Creative Microsystems was showing their Kickstart Eliminator. They sold
a lot. They say that their licensing agreement will allow them to swap
1.3 Kick when (if) such a beast becomes available. Price $129.95.

- Aminetics was showing their Squeeze-RAM internal 1.5M memory expansion.
They say it works with Sidecar, CMS Kickstart Eliminator and drains only
5 watts of power. It is sold in kits to save (them and you) money. User
group price (5 or more) was $109.

- DataCraft Inc. was showing RawPower, and IEEE-488 interface for the Amiga.
  Price $695.

- Perry Kivolowitz of ASDG came down from New Jersey and was showing a VERY
NICE full slot memory card for the 2000. He told me that the 2000-and-1
is coming along with 2 competing designs. He should be back on USENET
sometime in the future from the Well.

- We (Felsina Software) were showing a-Talk and A-Talk Plus and a "beta"
version of our new product, a Tektronix 4105 color graphics emulator.
Price and shipping date not available at this time. We hope July.

- Aegis showed up. They gave away Aegis Draw Plus for about $100 and were
showing Diga! and VideoScape-3D. Diga! is still on hold. It crashed
almost continuously ("It is a beta" said the guy). One nice thing is that
it has Ymodem. One bad thing, they took people's money two months ago
(for Diga!) and who knows when they'll deliver it. VideoScape-3D by
Allen Hastings, a 3D animation system, looked really nice and fast. It
can replay frame by frame for previewing at about 1 frame per second, but
requires a VCR that can RECORD in single frame for building the final
animated movie. But there is good news. The Aegis guy told me that they
had just bought such a VCR made by Emerson for LESS than $200. They still
have a lot of work for the user interface (currently no menus, just CLI),
and they hope to get it out by July (Don't bet on it).

- The Commodore Reps ware showing the Genlock and the A2000 (still the German
version). They were told that the A2000 would ship on June 14 in the US,
after starting shipping in Europe on June 12, coinciding with the Commodore
  Show in London.

- Other Participants: Live! from A-Squared, showed by another developer, which
got one of the prototipe machines; Micro-Illusions (Dynamic-CAD, Fairy Tale
adventure); Jim Sachs showed a LOT of nice drawings from 2000 Legues under
the Sea, and some of his old stuff; Oxxi showed MaxiPlan (they advertised
free upgrades). That's it. By the way, Central Coast Software was not at
the show since "they were going to the AmigaWorld Expo In San Francisco".
(That's the one they cancelled :-)
