It's not perfect, but most of the time you can send ANSI color sequences to
console devices.  Try this in a CLI:

<esc>[43m

40-47 sets the background color (numbers 44-47 wrap back to the same 4 colors)
30-37 sets the character color.

"console device" part III, Chapeter 4.

Be sure to click into the Workbench screen so that the screen title bar
reads "Workbench release 1.2.  XXXXXXX free memory.".  Hold down
both Alt's and both Shifts.  With that combination held, press and hold one
function key at a time.  Each key has it's own message.

The other back door (the one that has you press the buttons on the picture
of the mouse in preferences) does not seem to work for me
