[comp.sys.amiga] 1000->2000 upgrade: no longer just a rumor!!

gary@eddie.MIT.EDU (Gary Samad) (06/10/87)

That's right! At COMDEX, Rich McIntyre (sp?) the VP of Sales and Marketing
personally announced that there WILL be an upgrade policy! No specific
details yet, though...

And, by the way, he is a VERY effective speaker. I'm glad to have him handling
Sales and Marketing for Commodore!

I spoke to my local dealer here in Berkeley, seems that before the Comdex
show there was a Commodore Dealer meeting. They put up all these dealers
in a hotel in Atlanta (or at least in the distant suburbs) and told them
what was up. So He tells me that the deals is this:

the 2000 is going to list for $2495 and that if you bring in your old
1000 and $1000 you can get a 2000 (since 1+1=2). The list for the 2000
is much higher than before (when we heard $1500). Two things happened,
one: they looked around and saw that their machine did all sorts of special
things that others didn't and decided it was worth more. The other thing
that happened was that they decided to include the bridge card in the list
price (what else are the slots good for?). So figure that you are getting
the virgin 2000 for just under $2000.

The suggested list for the A2000 is $1995. I suppose the dealer may have
given you a price for a system including a monitor, or including the
Bridgeboard (both $495 extra, suggested list).

$The other thing that happened was that they
$decided to include the bridge card in the list
$price (what else are the slots good for?).

The Bridgeboard is an OPTION.
We are not quoting a suggested retail of $2495, we say $1995, and the
Bridgeboard has a suggested retail of $499.

While it is true that the PC slots are not worth a lot without the
Bridgeboard, this does not apply to "slots" in general on the A2000.
There are *5* Amiga slots, a CPU expansion slot, and a video slot, in
addition to the 4 PC slots (one of which must be filled with the
Bridgeboard).

Also, these are SUGGESTED RETAILS from Commodore. What the dealers
decide to charge is up to them.

My local Amiga dealer just had a big bash introducing the 500 and 2000,
cutting deals on software, etc. etc. and they had docs saying that one
could upgrade from the 1000 to the 2000 for $1000.

In my opinion, though, it isn't a good idea to trade up because the
advantages of the 2000 are vapor until cheap hard disks,
coprocessors (68020?), memory and such become commercially available.
Also, the 1000 was being routinely discounted by as much as 25% within
a few months of its introduction. If it's the same for the 2000, you
should be able to buy one outright for $1000 (minus monitor of course,
you have one, right?) in a few months and keep your 1000 as a doorstop
or whatever.

The latest rumor I have seen is a C=128->Amiga-500 upgrade policy. Nobody in
their right minds would miss out on this one.

This sure sounds like you get an A2000 WITH bridge card on the trade in.
Any comments?

Not sure this is completely correct. If memory serves, the going
price for a 2000 is $1995. This price does not include monitor. Therefore
a 25% discount yields a $1500 price tag - still more than the $1000 for
an upgrade.

One of the advantages of getting the bridge card for the 2000 would be
the ability to plug in either a PC hard-card or PC internal drive
(using the 5.25" cutout to support it). Either way you will pay about
$400 for 20 Megabytes. So counting the Bridge card your looking at
$995 for a hard disk (where have I heard that number before), but at
the same time you do get PC compatibility.

Pardon me for correcting your math, but if the 1000 was discounted 25%
within a few months and the same happened to the 2000 you would be
able to buy it for $1500 not $1000. Frankly, I don't see Commodore
pushing that hard for it. No offense intended, but the 500 puts
Commodore marketing right back in familiar territory, it can be
marketed like a souped up C-64. I am wondering though why it doesn't
have AmigaBASIC in ROM though...

Does this mean for $1000 upgrade you get the bridge card too?

$Godfrey Lee, Cognos Incorporated, 3755 Riverside Drive,

No, it does not. Randy's posting was either misleading, or incorrect.
The suggested list of the A2000 is $1995, and the Bridgeboard (A2088) is
$499, and so the combined list would be $2494. These two products are
sold separately by Commodore, though. The dealer may merchandise them
however they wish of course.
