[comp.sys.amiga] REAL copy protection

ugmiker@sunybcs.UUCP (07/07/87)

This arguement should be killed..... but....

THE BEST SOFTWARE PROTECTION!!!!!!!
On the back of the facc(by asdg, of course) packaging was the best
copy protection scheme I have yet to see. It is a two line sentence
that makes you think about pirating(at least it made me think). It
is not a direct quote, but here goes anyway...
(maybe perry could give us the exact quote)

We here at asdg have always helped out the the
amiga users, please don't pirate our software.

With that line and the fact that there are free updates for facc, I
will buy it, not ask one of my friends to copy it. I am the preverbial
poor college kid, making about $45 a week, and taking classes, but I
will pay $30 of that $45 on facc, instead of pirating it.

keep up the good work perry.....

p.s. The author has a RIGHT to protect his investment(time, money, etc.)
     BUT
That right should not be taken to the extent where it inhibits the
usability, and poductivity of the product.

Mike,
Thank you. Thank you from our very core. Especially in view of the
fact that your attitude is exactly what we had hoped people would have. We
are really heartened by your message. Thanks again.

Oh, and send me your address - I was a student at sunysb for seven years.
I know how it can be. Let us send you a copy of Facc, and you find some
other way of spending that $30 (I am sure it won't be hard :-).

The quote was:

This disk is not copy protected. ASDG has served the Amiga
	community  well  (remember the ASDG Recoverable Ram Disk);
	Please don't pirate our software.

I agree. I've heard both sides of the argument before.

The quote (from my copy of Facc) is:

"This disk is not copy protected. ASDG has served the Amiga community
well (remember the ASDG Recoverable Ram Disk); please don't pirate our
software."

I am an even poorer college kid, who is (seriously) wondering how I
am going to eat for the remainder of the month, and I sent in my $$$
for Facc as well. Good product + support + low price = customer on my
part. I can't say that I've never illegally copied software, but this
is one piece of software I *do* feel loyal about and will not allow
others to copy.

As a BBS sysop, I know that the sysops (well, the Fidonet ones at
least) in the Pittsburgh area are very conscious about pirate software
appearing on their boards and squelch it as soon as it appears. If
someone were distributing copyrighted software without permission on a
BBS, any responsible sysop would remove it as soon as he realized it
was illegal. Otherwise, they deserve whatever criminal prosecution
they get.
