[comp.sys.amiga] The Amiga 2000 Keyboard.

CRONEJP@UREGINA1.BITNET (06/29/87)

Could anyone (or more specifically some one from Commodore)
tell me if the Amiga 2000 keyboard is compatible with the
Amiga 1000 system unit.
If it's possible to hook the A2000 keyboard up to the A1000
could someone give me the pinouts for an adapter from the
RJ11C on the A1000 to the 5 pin Din thats on the A2000 keyboard
Unit...
Also, if the hook up of the A2000 keyboard to the a1000 is feasible
what else has to be done.....
Presumeably the A1000 system unit has to be tolD what all those
extra keys mean.
Is that done through the Keymaps file in SYS:DEVS/Keymaps
or is some other form of magic required.

Thanks....

<insert you favorite line-eater joke here please>

Along the same lines, (can the A1000 keyboard be hooked up to the A2000,) does
anybody know if it would be possible to plug the daughter board of the A1000
in the A2000? Sorry folks, but I happen to LIKE having my operating system
in easily modifiable RAM rather then fixed permanently in ROM. (Send your
opinions/objectoins about this to me, please, not to the net in general).
Anyway, the biggest thing that is keeping me from looking at these fancy
A1000->A2000 upgrades (other than lack of funds, which can be remedied,) is
the fact that I will be stuck with 1.2 in ROM. I personally have no complaints
with 1.2 now, but there has been enough discussion of "suggestions for 1.3"
that I could possibly want the upgrade in the future sometime. I am almost
afraid to ask how much Commodore would charge for the replacement of the ROMs
when they have already charged $15 for a simple update of the existing
operating system :-). Commodore, any comments? I would have mailed this
to you directly, but I think others might be interested in this as well. Also,
I can't seem to get mail to you.

Sure, just build the reverse direction adaptor.

Nope. The layout of the WCS tower is designed specifically for the A1000.
The sockets wouldn't be in the right place even if you didn't have to worry
about things like circuitry differences between the A1000 and A2000, and the
fact that there's a large 200 Watt power supply where you'd want to place the
WCS board.

When the operating system gets revised, there will certainly be ROMs available
in upgrade kits. This is no big deal, we're doing this with C128s and 1571s
right now. And the A2000s only require one ROM, not three like the C128.
Most people appreciate the faster bootup times, and don't mind trading daily
aggrevation at having to insert Kickstart vs. aggrevation during new system
releases (certainly less than once per year) in installing the new ROM. And
it's easy enough to do, the ROMs are always socketed.

Wake up and smell the coffee, man! $15 is too much? The 1.2 upgrade should
be considered one of the all-time software upgrade bargains. EA charges more
for Deluxe Paint upgrades! Or for an unprotected copy of the protected thing
you just bought! Lattice charges $100 for its C language upgrade! And Lotus
charges a couple of hundred to upgrade a lousy, stinkin' spreadsheet written for
an 8 bit computer! $15 was practically a give-away.

I agree! Many of my friends who believe Big Blue is the way to go pay hundreds
of $ for the equivalent. All software PD, FishDisks, Shareware, or commercial
for the Amiga is a bargain compared to that for Big Blue. I just hope that the
sales of the 500 and 2000 are great so things will get even better.

	Yes, it is compatible.

I don't have this info handy, but only 4 pins of the din
are used. Get the +5 and Ground correct, please, the other
two are clock and data, and one way works, the other doesn't.

All you need is a better keymap to activate the additional keys,
since they were present as spares in the old key matrix. The map
is include on the A500/A2000 workbench diskette, so perhaps we
can uuencode it and post it...
