[comp.sys.amiga] Operation Silk Purse

rminnich@udel.EDU (Ron Minnich) (08/25/87)

Well, i have been looking at dvi2ps and thinking about
dvi2iff (so i can preview TeX on the Amiga). Before i start,
might as well check- anybody else doing this? I sure hope so ...
Has anybody noticed that iff files from DPaint still look lousy
on the LaserWriter? Anybody out there have any solutions?
There is an MCad program on the Fred Fish disks; does this
program save things as objects or IFF? Anybody out there
tried low-pass filtering it? (I know, i'm reaching).
Gosh this stuff can get depressing. It would be nice to
1) be able to edit figures on the Amiga for inclusion in articles-
still cannot; Deluxe Paint figures included in one article
   elicited nasty comments from reviewers.
2) Be able to view graphics stuff before dumping to
QMS or Laserwriter without plunking down another $700 for
   software and hardware.
After one year of ownership this machine is still just for games.
Sigh.

Yes, and no. If you dump a 320 X 200 image to the LaserWriter and blow it
up to 7.5 X 10 inches it looks really blocky. If you dump a 1000 X 750
image to a LaserWriter as a 7.5 X 5.5 inch bitmap it looks ok. Better
still is to dump an Aegis Draw+ drawing to the LaserWriter at the LaserWriters
resolution (no scaling per se) and that looks as good as you could hope to
find on LaserWriter.

I would suggest the Aegis draw combination. Anthony Studios in San Francisco
has a Draw <-> PostScript converter (as well as a page composer sort of thing)
That will probably do what you need. TeX of course generates the best text
output I have ever seen.

These opinions are my own and no one elses, but you knew that didn't you.

One of the new disks in my next batch (91-98?) will contain a program
called "iff2ps" that works quite well. It converts standard IFF files,
including HAM files, to postscript files suitable for cramming directly
down the laserwriter's throat. The new batch of disks will probably be
released after this coming weekend. Watch for an announcement here.
