The information on the new Atari computer is limited, and I am not entirely sure of it, but this is what (as best I can remember) The Guardian had to say about the new ST machine: It would have an inmos transputer linked to a 68XXX. It would be downwards compatable with the ST series It would be developed in England by Perihelios PLC, and the OS will be called Helios, and will be written by Tim King. Other than this, I am really not sure. Atari has been blowing smoke about their 32 bit machines for a long time, but this is their first annoucement. It does seem unusual that Atari would have a small English company develop the computer, and downright stupid to annouce it 1 year in advance! I am also very skeptical about this. Should this indeed be a lot more than smoke this time, it would be reassuring to hear from C= just how much a threat it would be with the price mentioned at being less than 2000 pounds sterling, though not confirmed. I have been told that there may be an inmos transputer attatchment for the A2000 in the CPU slot, though I cannot be sure until I see one. As for C='s new ad campaign, well, it appears that they have some neat TV commericials, but just aren't ready to begin their pre-christmas ad blitz. Disclaimer: Most of the above is based on a poor memory and some hearsay, and is in no way meant to be an absolute statement of fact. pbrody@udenva -- =============================================================================== || The above is not representative of the opinions of the Universtiy || || of Denver || || || || Paul Brody || || pbrody@udenva || ===============================================================================

When I read this I got a delightful vision of Helios functions talking to GEM functions where you have to both shift the address over by two bits as well as swap the bytes to put them in 80x86 order. As some of you know Tim was the major (only?) architect of AmigaDOS (just the DOS part not the exec or graphics or anything). --Chuck McManis uucp: {anywhere}!sun!cmcmanis BIX: cmcmanis ARPAnet: cmcmanis@sun.com These opinions are my own and no one elses, but you knew that didn't you.

I've always thought it was a little strange that MetaComCo offers a BCPL compiler for the ST, but not for the Amiga (actually, they advertise the Amiga version as TBA [To Be Announced]). Could it be that this move to Helios is a long range plot, architected long ago? BTW, anybody else think that "Helios" has the "hear and sound" of "Tripos"? Will Tripos take over the world? Is Tim King related to "Madman Muntz"? Stay tuned for further exciting developments ... /kim -- UUCP: kim@amdahl.amdahl.com or: {sun,decwrl,hplabs,pyramid,ihnp4,seismo,oliveb,cbosgd}!amdahl!kim DDD: 408-746-8462 USPS: Amdahl Corp.
