[comp.sys.amiga] Midi timing problems

mook@pnet02.UUCP (09/12/87)

I have heard and read a lot about the Amigas' "problem" with
time resolution when using MIDI. There is some underlying truth
here. Most of the Amigas' clocks are subject to interuption, dueto the nature
of the multi-tasking operating system. When Todor Fay wrote "Soundscape", he
settled on using the 60hz video clock for midi timing. As this was the only
MIDI sequencer available untill quite recently, it has given considerable fuel
to the notion that Amigas are unsuitable for MIDI sequencing. Even worse, the
first few versions of SS had some OTHER bugs in the clock module that caused
it to speed up and slow down. Anyone who tried SS 1.1 or 1.3 would have been
horrified with the general sloppiness of the time. (and many people were.)
Anyway, Todor has long since found another clock to use, and the new clock
module (software) is supposed to work very well. It should also
be pointed out that most computer sequencing programs on other
machines require "smart" MIDI interfaces that generally cost
+/- $400. The Amiga version of "Texture" follows this tradition, and it is
supposed to work just fine. If you can spare $800.
