[comp.sys.amiga] Searching for elusive expansion hardware

grv@tahoma.ARPA (Jerry VandenHeuvel) (08/31/87)

I've been looking at various expansion units (disk, memory, clock/calendar,
etc.) to add to my A1000 for about six months now (still waiting for the
overtime money to accumulate enough $$ :-). I thought I had found the
package when Byte by Byte redesigned the PAL Jr. box into something a
little more esthetically pleasing (they already had an excellent hardware
design). Now I find out from a number of sources, including Byte by Byte,
that the PAL Jr. has been discontinued (after only four or five months in
the new form factor!) and that they are getting out of hardware altogether!
The person I talked to at Byte by Byte stated that they were having
problems getting the DMA chips from Commodore and that they couldn't
sustain a high enough margin on their hardware products. She then told me
that all PAL Jr. boxes off the production line were "spoken for". Seems
strange to me discontinue a product that must have sold fairly well. I
certainly hope this isn't the start of a trend for third party companies
producing expansion products for the A1000.

So now I start the quest all over again. Anyone hooked up the StarBoard2
(with the multi-function card in it) and a hard disk (C Ltd, Supra, others)
to an A1000? What's new on the horizon besides the 2000 and 1 from ASDG
(Perry, any new information about when and what?) that might allow cost
effective expansion of my system? Yes, I am considering the as yet
unofficial trade-in up to an A2000, but as a last resort. Any and all
e-mail would be appreciated.

In response to the referenced message, the 2000-and-1 is expected to be
out before Xmas (1987). I've mentioned the price before: $799. And I've
mentioned the feature list before:

	2	A1000 slots
	1	86 pin A2000 co-processor slot
	5	A2000 slots
	3	IBM slots
	2	3.5 inch drive bays
	1	5.25 inch drive bay
	1	honker power supply
and.....choice of exciting designer colors (major :-) :-))
(for some people's benefit :-) is a smiley face meant
to denote less than serious jests.)

I dunno Leo, thats going to clash badly with your cape. Go for a more
nuetral green.

Do we have to have solid colors ? Couldnt we send an IFF file and have it
applied ?
