[comp.sys.amiga] Just got my A500

dillon@CORY.BERKELEY.EDU (Matt Dillon) (09/09/87)

I just got my A500 today... it's now sitting on top my A1000. The
first thing I'm going to do with it is network it with my A1000 through
the serial port on the CIA chip (not the serial.device serial port)....
conveniently connected to BUSY and POUT lines on the parallel port.

One nice thing about the Sony KV13CR monitor is that it has multiple
inputs for video so I can use it for both computers and flip between them
with a button rather than manually changing wires.

(BTW: The other CIA's serial port is used for the keyboard)

First impressions of the A500: Nice Job! I like it.

Er, one of the only things worth it in the Metacomco toolkit is the aux:
device. (And there's a freeware one of them now.) Why not use that to allow
one Amiga to serve as a terminal on the other for debugging purposes? At least
for starters that beats trying to hack at the CIA chips. (Hope you do not
have a MAS-20...)

Er you like the fuzzies of the composite input? There is only one honest to
Gloz RGB analog input on the thing. )Or is there something I'm missing?(

No accident, you could, if you really felt the compulsion, write
a Commdore (C64/128) Serial Bus driver and make an adapter cable.

THANKS! It may not be perfect, but we did what we could within
the budget that our planned "suggested retail price" allowed.

Wow, Matt, does that mean you have an A1500?

Those 500s do look good, I must agree. At the Computer Attic Amiga Show
today they had plenty of them, and Escort was advertising their $849
2 Meg expansion chasis, designed for the 500. That looks good too, but
only the pictures were available...

In any case, at the Amiga Show we picked up a copy of Little Computer
People. We brought it home, read the first page of the manual, saw
the part that said "insert KickStart 1.1," laughed, and booted up
with 1.2, thinking that everything would be fine. So the program starts
up, we wait a few minutes, the door opens, we hear footsteps, then a bit
later the file cabinet opens and closes... But there's no LCP! At this
point we realized that our LCP was invisible and actually looking at the
house. Invisible, can you imagine, we pay $22 and get an invisible LCP!

Anyway, as you might've guessed, the problem was with 1.2, or maybe with
expanded memory. We booted with 1.1 (which so conveniently fails to
recognize the 2 Meg Alegra), and then everything was fine. Victor was
visible.

So, warning to all future LCP owners --- boot with 1.1. (What do A500
owners do? Yank out that extra memory?) We'll be letting Activision
know about this. (Although it was quite amusing.) Good thing not too
many programs act like this.

(BTW, Bay Area people: The Amiga Show is also going on tomorrow, (13th)
from noon to 5pm. It's fun to go see all the stuff, and the Attic prices
are lower than normal (VS3D is $139, for instance.))
