Those warnings about not plugging in cables while powered up is simpily a warning just so you won't accidentially mis-allign the pins when plugging in and fry something. An A/B switch should work just fine. Whenever you plug in using your hands while powered up you can cross short some pins, but an AB switch shouldn't present any problems.
