Reading about how changing the steprate made the disks more pleasant to
listen to reminds me of the same phenom on my old Osborne.

Then I got nostalgic about another patch I had on my O. It was possible
to patch WordStar, SuperCalc, and so on, so that they bypassed the
commercial at the beginning whenever you ran them. Has anyone done the
same to DPAINT for example. Do I really have to look at that paint
can for 30 seconds?

When I got my unprotected version of DPaint the first thing I did was copy
it to my hard disk. (And several art disks too) When I booted it up there
was no Paint Can! Then I booted it from the original disk and there was
a Paint Can! Comparision of the two disks revealed that the only difference
was the existence of :lo-res/paintcan (or whatever it is called) versus
:dpaint/lo-res/paintcan which was how it appeared on the hard disk.

Conclusion : if it can't find it, it won't open it.

These opinions are my own and no one elses, but you knew that didn't you.
