[comp.sys.amiga] Receiving files from comp.binaries.amiga

hunt@tramp.Colorado.EDU (HUNT LEE CAMERON) (10/25/87)

I was glad to find that there was a depository for Amiga software, but
I don't seem to be able to use it! What I'm doing is this:

1) I save the uuencoded posting to a file (using non-mailbox format)

2) I clip off the header from the top of the archive file I just created.

3) I uudecode it.

4) I transfer it to my Amiga.

The only problem is that I always get a corrupted file. When I try to run
the program, I get a 'file is not an object module' error. I think what
might be wrong is that the file size of the file on the mainframe that
I download to my Amiga is always about a half a kilobyte smaller.
I am using Kermit to download (which is the only file transfer utility
offered on our system). Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?

   Thanks,
~ Lee Hunt ~

Most likely, you're using 7-bit ascii to download an object file--bad
news. Make sure that you 'set file type binary' on your host kermit server,
and set the transfer type to 'image' (if there is more than one type) on your
Amiga kermit program. There shouldn't be any problem with ALWAYS using these
modes. In fact, if your host is running BSD UNIX, you can create a .kermrc
file in your home directory that contains the lines
	set file type binary
	server
which will cause kermit to start up in server mode, with the file type set
correctly.

You may have one of three problems, all of which i had.
First is that the file may have been corrupt at the source. Nothing
you can do. Second is that you are running an old version of vt100,
but you say the file is truncated, so i doubt that is it (the old
version of vt100 i had- 2.1- had problems with binary files).
Third is that you are running the straight kermit. I just found
out the other day that this thing trashes files on random
occasions. The usual problem is truncation. Try to get vt100 R2.7;
that sure fixed the problem for me. The problem sure kept
me guessing because the kermit worked fine about 90% of the time,
and my usual experience with this stuff is that it either works
or does not.
Good luck

Move step #3 after step #4 -- transfer the file to the Amiga and *then*
uudecode it! (Uudecode is available on Fish Disk #53, I think. . .)

Try it -- it works (at least for me)!
