[comp.sys.amiga] a new use for an ugly machine

I've been thinking of putting my old pc to use as a file-server
for my A500. Reasoning? I can get a CHEAP/SLOW 30meg hard disk for
it (compared to expensive and possibly non-existent for my A500) and
hook the 2 up via the serial port at 19.2. this isn't the fastest
I know, but if I just used it for archiving it would probably beat
stacks of little floppys and indexing them.

Now, would it be possible to create a device to handle the serial
port so that I could say "copy pc:file file". I know I could probably
write a set of generic routines like get, put and list as an
alternative which know about the serial port and pc.

which protocol should I use, Since I won't be connecting the 2 over
noisy telephone lines, xmodem seems too slow, some windowing protocol
perhaps?

Lastly, this may sound bazarre even if the above hasn't, but would
it be possible to use the parallel port to connect the 2 and sort of
increase my throughput by 8???? And if this is possible, how does one
go about doing it!!!!
