[comp.sys.amiga] How to tame RF from A1000?

page@ulowell.cs.ulowell.edu (Bob Page) (11/16/87)

Something inside my A1000 generates a HUGE amount of RF when I power
the unit on. It's not the keyboard or internal disk drive; it looks
like it's Agnus or Denise, since I can read the Amiga's screen
downstairs on my TV (with rabbit ears). The Amiga's upstairs. It
also destroys the FM reception on the stereo (also downstairs) using a
simple 300-ohm T antenna.

[Sometimes I'd rather not have my wife and neighbors see what I'm
working on, but that's a different story. ;-) ]

It's done this since the day I got it; I never worried about it before
because I had cable; I've since moved and didn't get cable. The
system unit is an original August '85 unit, shipped just before the
first consumer ship, so I assume it's got FCC approval -- but the FCC
sure wouldn't approve of this! I've never taken the case off or made
any modifications to it .. no cables coming off the ports, etc.

The Amiga works OK, except HAM is a little messed up, no halfbright (I
usually don't use either) and my audio does some almost indescribable
things -- it sounds like it's grabbing the wrong registers once in a
while and trying to play one voice with a different voice's envelope,
or one envelope with a different voice. Kinda strange to hear the
cannons squeaking a little early in the 1812 Overture! I'd SWEAR it
was a software problem except I've run the same sounds on many other
units and never had the problem. I never bothered with it since I use
external synths for sound generation, except for simple beeps.

Any suggestions on how to fix this RF problem? I don't need
suggestions like "move your antennas" or "buy an A2000 with metal
case". Taking the unit for a $300 repair job to fix the chips so I
have functionality that I don't need doesn't thrill me. I can live
with the unit's functionality, but would like to get rid of its
spurious emissions.

Thanks in advance!

..Bob
