Here is a summary of the replies I got with regard to a C
compiler for IBM S/370 running MVS with JES2 and talking to
uucp with this machine.
(1) Bell has a C compiler for IBM but it has a bad reputa-
tion.
(2) uucp will have troubles talking to IBM equipment
because of duplex problems and protocol differences.
(3) Amdahl has a UNIX for S/370 that seems to have a good
reputation. One person states that it cost
$1500/month. But runs under VM not MVS.
(4) BCPL (the C ancestor) would probably be a quick alter-
native to C and is available.
(5) Princeton might have a C compiler available.
Comments: Several people discouraged getting Bell's C com-
piler. Duplex problems should not really be a problem since
the hardware to talk on the phone is selectable. It's prob-
ably best to avoid uucp and write a quick program to do the
data transfer. Everyone who mentioned Amdahl's UNIX
appeared to have good things to say about it. I programmed
in BCPL for quite some time and would not consider it an
alternative to C over PL/1. Anyone know a userid and path
at Princeton?
