[comp.sys.amiga] Marketroid and Workbench IFF pictures

ewhac@well.UUCP (Leo 'Bols Ewhac' Schwab) (11/14/87)

[ I like Amiga, okay? ]

After asking how I should post "Marketroid" to the Net, I received a
number of replies, all very coherent and helpful, but differing in opinion.

I have elected to not clutter the Net, and rely on Rokicki and Fish
for distribution of the goodie. If you can't wait, I can mail you a
uuencoded ARC file directly.

Other stuff: I also received a number of favorable replies on
writing a hack that allows the display of an IFF image in your workbench
backdrop window. Since then, I have learned that Eric Lavitsky of ASDG has
already created such a beast. Maybe if we all say please real nice, we can
get him to post it with source.

	Please?

Well Leo, I'll tell you - I am about to release DropCloth V2 in the
following fashion:

The full binaries and documentation will be posted to
comp.binaries.amiga either next week or just after the
holiday (depends if I have time to finish the docs)

Sources will be given to all those who make a shareware
contribution for DropCloth - oh around $15 I guess.

So, don't go bitching and whining to me about how I won't give out
source, or how I'm so greedy. I'm no corporate monster :-) I think
it's a rather fair exchange - I've put quite a bit of work into
DropCloth over the past few months, and it provides some clever
examples and techniques. I believe in shareware (or donations,
whatever you want to call it), and I want to see other people's
efforts supported as well.

Is that satisfactory to *your* tastes?

Eric

I like the sound of this idea, and I would like to hear how this scheme
or any other contribution incentive works out in practice.

Other things one might provide for cost to support an otherwise free
program are printed manual and updates. Have any other ideas been
tested?

I sold t-shirts for my game and responses haven't been overwhelming.
We get about 2-3 orders a week. We get just about as much fan-mail
as orders, also. I think I will also be selling the source, especially
since I just sold my pc and doubt if I will ever use it again...

Ah, but I (and, presumably, others) thought the T-shirt offer was a
joke! Considering the nature of the game, not a totally unreasonable
assumption. By the way, how's the Amiga version going?
