[comp.sys.amiga] extension cords

Marcus_Siskin@um.cc.umich.edu (11/16/87)

I have a question for you 2000 users.
My Boss has informed me that if we get the 2000 we have requested, that she
wants it to be placed on it's side on the floor. This means that I would have
to have the keyboard and Mouse cords extended.
First question is, will the A2000 work on it's side?? (we will have a hard
drive off the bridgecard, plus a 2 meg
card installed as well as a Genlock board.)
Second, what sorts of cords will I need to specify?
Any comments or stories from experience would be appreciated.

It should work just fine on end. You might check out one of
the PC type accessory stands, and try to avoid putting it where
it will suck in a lot of floor level dust and dirt.

Since the cord has the same pinout as an IBM PC, any of the
PC accessory keyboard extension cords should work. Note that
while the connector is compatible, the protocol is a bit
different, so don't try any "keyboard enhancers"...

For the mouse, you need some kind of 9-pin D "Joystick Extender"
cable. Make sure it has all 9 pins wired though...

I don't know about extending the cords (being a software type), but I
have used my A2000 on its side without any trouble at all, and I didn't
extend the cords because I had it to the right of me (sitting at the desk)
with the drive at the top (i.e., "normal" top of the machine is parallel
to me right calf). This gave me enough cord for both mouse and keyboard
to use it without extension.

After reading about this, I tried putting my 2000 on its side on a table next
to the desk and it's now much easier to use - it takes up less space and now
it looks like a 500! My only concern is this: when I purchase a 2090 and get
some kind of internal hard disk, will I have any problem using the 2000 on
its side?

Hard drives will work in either the vertical or horizontal plane.
They often will not work at other angles.
