[comp.sys.amiga] A500 doubts?

R38@PSUVM.BITNET (aka Marc Rifkin) (12/06/87)

The story so far:
Not too long ago, the Amiga 1000 was >$1000 for a 512k system and that was
only a dream for some of us 8-bit hackers. Then CA got a bit smarter and
came out with the 500 and 2000- both with reasonable {RUMORED} prices
(about $599 and $1499 respectivelyt). But when they came out they cost
$699 and $1799 or something like that (I am NOT sure.) Thanks to the
generosity of Mail Order vendors, I was able to purchase a 1meg 2drive
A500 for just a tad over $1000 (after selling EVERYTHING of my C128
system). I figured I could either expand the 500 to a decent point (memory
, hard drives) or upgrade to a 2000. Well...
The 500's power supply seems to be insufficient to power most peripherals
(this is not something new, I have read of this a long time ago). It
should be possible to construct your own power supply for things (in fact
a necessity).
Now to the point I am trying to find: If I wanted to go to a 2000, I
would sell my 1meg 500 and keep monitor/drive. I could sell it for say
$700, but a bare bones 2000 is at least $1600! Thats just 1meg, 1drive.
So, now, I consider myself lucky to HAVE a 7.16 MHZ 1meg 2drive AMIGA,
even if it is the most ergonomically and practically worst computer designed.

Thank you for letting me share my thoughts. I did not intend to solve
the problem or even propose a solution, but I hope that what I have said
will give someone else a great idea.

Much heftier power supplies for the A500 can be bought for $20. Of course,
you have to build your own case. :-)
