[comp.sys.amiga] Amiga ROM manuals

david@ms.uky.edu (David Herron -- Resident E-mail Hack) (12/07/87)

oops ... seems I slipped up and posted this to the wrong newsgroup
the first time around .... sigh

Well, I can't find thee article. Anyway, I'm curious about what
manuals to buy along with my new Amiga 2000. I've never owned
an Amiga before so don't have any technical docs lying around. On
the other hand I'm an experienced computer junky and those manuals
I saw in Walden's the other night look like they'd be ... er ... fun
to sink my teech into.

But I hear talk about upgrades to v1.3 and v1.4 of the OS ...
Will that make these fun-looking manuals obsolete? Or will there
be updates to buy? Or what?

Also, I'd be interested in comments on 3rd party books to get.
I already know to not subscribe to Amiga World, and instead to
subscribe to Amazing Computing :-) .

Send mail and I'll make a summary ...

Yes. It is confusing to find out what you need (everyone asks).
Commodore-Amiga Technical Support (CATS) should publish a brochure
including reviews of all technical books available, all languages and the
essential Publically Available (PA) programs (ASDG RRD, Conman, morerows,
etc.). Also a great place for some evangelizing about the importance of
good, cooperative, multitasking software.

Basically, one of the all-in-one books will get you started, then later
you need the Intuition Manual, The AmigaDOS Manual and the ROM
Kernel Manuals (RKM).

Volume 1 of the RKM is needed. Volume 2 is mostly throw-away. The
"AutoDocs" and include files are old printouts, and always will be
even in new versions of the manual. Current information comes from
CATS on disk.

*I HOPE* future versions of the RKM will cram all the text into
volume 1, and devote Volume 2 to *just* the AutoDocs, the
include files and the fd.files printouts. That way they could
lower the press runs of that book and update it more frequently.
Also, hackers short on cash could ignore the extra convenience
and only get Volume 1.

The RKM is already obsolete... it refers to V1.1. You live off
the "change notes" and new on-disk AutoDocs and Includes.

Some information does *not* get repeated or compiled, sadly...
AmigaMail the newsletter and the "Amiga Enhancer Manual" are not
generally available to the casual programmer. (You must subscribe to
AmigaMail, and back issues are a problem. The manual comes with
the V1.2 upgrade, tell me how many A500/A2000 owners will buy
that to get the manual. Right.)

The magazine you and everyone else reading this wants is:

	Transactor for the Amiga

They really want to ramp up a substantial subscriber base (so
the magazine will look more attractive to advertisers). $7.50 for an
entire year is an amazing bargain:

-----------------Magazine--------Disk----
Canada $9.50 cdn	$36.95 cdn
USA $7.50 $29.95
Foriegn	(snail)	$13.50 $39.95
Foreign	(air)	$32.50 $53.95
-----------------------------------------
Until January 1st!!!

Or you can switch from the old Tranactor by giving your old Sub #. Or get
both (you must specify). The United States address for Transactor is:

	The Trasactor
	PO Box 338 Station "C"
	Buffalo, NY 14209-9990

The old Transactor is a well respected magazine, they found the Amiga
taking over the magazine, and decided to speparate it. They really
are soliciting good, solid technical articles. Looks like a winner.
