[comp.sys.amiga] A2000 buyback `deals'... bogus ?!?

craig@unicus.UUCP (12/09/87)

Recently I directed an A1000 owning friend in the States to some of the
`buyback deals' that appeared on the net. You remember, claiming that

	"A2000 + A1000 buyback is available from X at $Y"

	Where X is a dealer and Y < $1200, in some cases Y < $900.

Well, two of these deals, one for US$700(!) in Arizona somewhere,
and US$868 from Computer Mail Order, were bogus. The Arizona outfit
claimed that not only was their price with buyback $1200, but they'd
never sold it for less. The Computer Mail Order guy had never heard
of `buyback', but he offered it for $1500(!).

Is this a case of:

	Disinformation ?
	Bait and switch ?
Stupid flunkies answering the phone ?
Special educational or bulk or other deals ?
Dealers deciding they weren't making anything on A2000s ?

or what ?

Now I have egg on my face, and I would like to direct this friend to
legitimate A2000 buyback offers. His finances are tight enough that
I won't send him back to CMO, and would like to find him the best deal.
Since Commodore has extended the offer, this isn't fatal, but time is tight.

So:
Who has *actually bought* from a A2000+buyback dealer ?
What price did you get ? How long to deliver (is it there yet)?
Where is the dealer and who specifically did you deal with ?
Were there special offers in effect (time limited or otherwise) ?
Any horror stories or similar misguided attempts at buyback ?

I don't intend to impugn the posters, who no doubt thought the information
was legitimate, but the net should know what's up.

FYI

I've bought an A2000 through a buy-back deal from The Software Shop
in Philadelphia ... I found out about the deal from a posting right
here in this newsgroup. They are charging $1057 ($50 for the buy-back
and $7 for shipping) for the A2000. I don't have the machine yet, but
I do have a letter from them saying they will be receiving my machine
on the 17th ... (fortunately that means my machine will arrive AFTER
finals week ... :-) ... very important!)

I don't have their phone number handy or I'd include it ..
