[comp.sys.amiga] Bugs

U613042@HNYKUN11.BITNET (Olaf Seibert) (12/08/87)

Two bugs, I want to tell you about here.

1. There is a bug in (graphics.library/intuition/MrgCop/Who knows), that
will show up if you do/have the following:
  - PAL Amiga 1000
  - Open a screen with a width of at least 640+32 pixels,
                       a depth of 4 bitplanes
a height of more than 213 non-interlaced lines.
  - Now, anything below the 213th line on your screen won't be
visible on your monitor. It is covered by a color-0 border,
but your screen is really as large as you wanted. You just don't
see it. When you drag the title bar of the screen below the
213 border, suddenly you do see something there: your title bar.
  - Remove any of the above stated requirements, and the bug
    won't show up.

Another bug, possibly related:

Again, required is a PAL Amiga 1000.

Move the mouse pointer below the (approx.) 213th line, then move it
horizontally to the left and/or to the right. Not too slowly, please.
You might notice that you see TWO pointers, close to each other.
When you stop moving, there is only only one pointer, as usual.

Now for the next phase.

Fire up Workbench [I guess you didn't do that already], select
any object, and ask Info about it.
Now click outside of the info window, but inside a Workbench window.
The Zzz cloud should now appear, as usual.
But now - do it again below the 213th line ... and you REALLY have
TWO pointers!!! The old arrow, which is frozen to the screen, and
the cloud, which you can move!!

This seems to be a hardware bug, just like the one that all sprites
below some line on the screen (line 213??) all get the colors of sprite
0. (Note that I have not verified this myself).

I asked someone with a 500 to try the same thing, and he told me
he did not get the effect I described here, but again, I have not
verified this myself.

So, any hardware type from Commodore wants to comment on this? Thanx!

Yes, This has been driving me crazy, good to know that I am not the only
one around here that sees these things.

Actually, this will also show up in programs that change the mouse pointer
themselves. I have Prowrite as my word processor and when I move the mouse
to the window the pointer changes and leaves the old default pointer image
sitting at the bottom of my screen. Always did annoy me.

I don't feel that I have added anything particularly important but I
did want to see a response from Commodore, so I added my voice to this.

Lots of things get funny in overscan, especially in interlace mode. In
some cases, this simply reflects the way the chips work, in other cases
there are software or hardware problems where either the person doing the
work didn't adequately contemplate the impact of overscan or didn't think
it was a major issue. Hopefully these will get cleaned up in the long run
but for now, overscan is a somewhat excpetional mode of operation that you
can either live with or avoid using.
