From CSVAX:ihnss!ihuxl!ignatz Sat Jun 12 12:32:31 1982 Subject: COBOL on UNIX: one answer Newsgroups: net.general Sorry for putting this on the net, but I can't seem to mail to the following path, which headed a request for info on UNIX COBOL: harpo!decvax!ucbvax!G:ARPAVAX:CAD:teklabs!reed!billst (If anyone can explain WTH is going on with that address, and why the berkeley mailer barfs on it, thnx much. This isn't the first time I've gotten munged up trying to go thru there...-dmi) This path will `barf' as a result of the local Berkeley Network of which G, ARPAVAX, and CAD are a part. For this particular path, all you'd have to do is throw out the names with colon suffixes, and you have: harpo!decvax!ucbvax!teklabs!reed!billst Which is a valid address, in so far as berkeley is concerned. The trouble lies in that Berknet is organized like the ARPAnet, in that paths are transparent, and all you need to know is the destination. Specifying a path will definetly upset it. Currently the Berknet forwards news through one machine at a time, in a uucp fashion, even though each site on the Berknet can get to the others. If certain people are reading this (Harruph!) it may soon be that these wierd and unnatural addresses will disappear from the news. One more thing: don't throw out the colons for local Berkeley addresses! My return address through the berknet, for example, is ucbvax!Cory:erik. That won't work if you take out the colon. Erik E.
