[comp.sys.amiga] Viruses and pirating

rouaix@inria.UUCP (Francois Rouaix) (01/03/88)

It seems that my last article about Viruses raised indignant reactions.
Let me explain my point:
1- I do NOT say that every people that has contaminated disk is a
pirate.
2- I say that Viruses come from pirates.

	My conclusion is :
Virus propagate to you for three possible reasons
	a) you run a pirated (contaminated) soft on your machine. In this case
you have NO right to complain,
	b) you boot one of your disk on another Amiga that is contaminated.
I will say you should take precautions everytime. (have you heard of
	AIDS ;-)
	c) you receive a PD bootable disk supposedly safe but contaminated.
Install !. It won't hurt anyway.

And now for the imponderables:
If you distribute PD disks, make sure they are safe. Install.
This will help stopping all Viruses. Other people are trusting you.

If you write commercial software, make sure your masters are safe !

Another point is that you can't rely on Virus Detectors. The CATS VCheck
is OK for the old strain from SCA, but now that some irresponsible jerks
created new strains, VCheck is not enough.

Well, that's it. I think I will not interfere again on comp.sys.amiga on
this subject. Please email for followups.
