[comp.sys.amiga] Gripe about disksalv/diskdoctor

peter@sugar.UUCP (Peter da Silva) (12/29/87)

Is there any way to convince disksalv/diskdoctor to only restore the files
I want restored? No, of course not. Well, if disksalv makes it into 1.3,
how about making that an option?

Isn't the source for disksalv floating around? Dave?

Since I just asked Dave this very question a few weeks back....

Yes the source is available on a Fish Disk (sorry don't have the # handy).

It's on fish 20, with source. It's not a trivial task to recover just
one file ... well, it IS trivial, but if you have one file messed up
chances are very VERY good that something else is wrong. Just fixing
the original file won't fix the disk.

You can sort of recover a file using Sectorama, using the Write to File
option. You have to know a lot about the innards of the FS though.
It also doesn't FIX the file, it just recovers the data to some other
place (like RAM: or something).

DiskSalv doesn't fix the disk anyway. All it does is save files and write
them to a new disk. I guess the thing to do is get Fish Disk 20.

Anyone interested in doing an "Undelete" program? That's most of what I end
up using disksalv for anyway (at least before a recent batch of bad diskettes).

Once, using a new file requester system, I managed to mess up
both my work disk and my primary backup, losing about a months
work. I ended up using a program called "DiskX" which I found on
"DEVDISK 0026" from DevWare, a local PD distributor. With this
program I was able to reconstruct much of the lost text files.

Having looked through the blocks on a disk in this way it seems
to me that undelete usually only work if no other disk activity has
        occured (writes) since the delete.

Got a spec. for how you think this program should function? I
need to learn about the file system and this seems like a short
project, so I might be interested.

                                                        Thanks,

                                                                Wade.

I have one that ive been using for about a year now. I am not the programmer,
I found it on a local BBS. There is no source code only executable. What it
does is read the disk with the deleted file in drive df0: and writes the new
(recovered) file to DF1:. I have modified (read - FileZapped) it into 3 more
versions for RAM: - VDK: - VD0:. If you want them I will uuencode them and
upload it to the net if there is enough interst. If not I can mail them to
 you!

Yes, this is another glaring ommission in DiskSalv that I'm fully aware
of and intend to fix One-Of-These-Days (eg, not necessarily Real Soon
Now). Between too much work-work and a slightly ailing A1000 that I've
been too busy to fix, I don't expect I'll have anything right away, if
you've got a bad disk that need fixing now. What happens to DiskDoctor
is for Andy's group to determine.

As reported yesterday, UNDELETE does exist. I downloaded it from
PeopleLink - the file was found by the uploader on some other BBS.
It is binary only (arc'ed file takes up about 11K, paid no attention
to the unarc'ed size.)

I ran it - the command line looks like this:

     undelete filename

responds: (from memory, did this late last nite)

Put the disk with the deleted file into df0:
and put another disk into df1:

     Scanning source disk for <filename>...

it step-step-step's from track 0 to 79, then presumably if it finds
the deleted file's sectors, it will rebuild the file onto the other
drive, similar to the way I've seen DiskSalv operate.

I did not try a "real" test. It is in PeopleLink, Amiga Zone, section 4,
I think file number 2497. Seems greatest use is for anyone who does
not have DiskSalv.

Perhaps someone will cook one up. I'd rather not repost anything for
which I don't have access to the source. If lotsa folks really want
it anyhow, I'll ship it to Fred Fish as received.
