[comp.sys.amiga] AmiExpo LA - A Report LONG

papa@pollux.usc.edu (Marco Papa) (01/19/88)

Back from AmiExpo LA. Nice to see Dale, Jim, Perry, Eric, Leo, Chuck,
John [Foust], etc... all out there.

Some of the things I [very subjectively] found interesting.

* Digi Paint II: adds: - 3-D image mapping
			- more brush effects
			- full overscan support
			- enhanced HAM
			- 1024x1024 superbitmaps
			- New painting modes (coloring)
			- Swaps screens (for F/X animations)
			- + lots more features.

* Supra HD drives - If you are a developer, they have VERY good deals
for all their drives. Check them out.

* Very Vivid's Mandala. I finally saw it. I love it! One can really create
"interactive art" for a relatively small price. Their system sells
now for $395 (not > $10,000) and works with Live!. The demo from the
Sony AmiExpo Theater was very impressive.

* Inner Connections Inc. had a 20M 5 1/4 Bernoulli drive for the Amiga 1000
and 2000. They are not cheap ($1695 for the A2000 version, $1795 for
the A1000 version), but Bernoulli boxes have never been cheap.
	First shipment: February.

* ASDG SDP. The A1000 version is basically ready. The A2000 sometime around
late spring/early summer. It supports up to 56 SCSI devices, 2 ST-506.
Has an MC68000 and MMU on it. Features autoboot, and optional math
	coprocessor.
On a side issue. My 8MI had a glitch. Perry just swapped it with a NEW
board, no questions asked. Now, that's support! [By he way, Perry has
	moved to Wisconsin.]

* WordPerfect Library. Scheduled for release: 1Q 88. Price: $129. Contains:
Notebook, Calendar, Calculator, File Manager, Program Editor.

* Publishing Partner from SoftLogic, another Desktop publishing system.
Lists for $199.95, or $50 with Pagesetter trade-in.

* Hurricane Accelerator board for the A1000 and A2000, with MC68020 and
68881 math chip. A1000 version available now ($1045 including chips).
A2000 version ($1095) within 2-4 weeks. Unlike CSA's board (see
AmigaWorld article) it will run FASTER than the 68000 using 16-bit
memory. Unlike CSA's board, which uses EXPENSIVE 32-bit STATIC ram,
allows expansion with 32-bit DYNAMIC ram as follows:

	0K (unpopulated 32-bit memory expansion ) $495
	2Mb	$895
	4Mb	$1295

* MANX SDB is shipping! They are following the waiting list as orders were
received. That's when they'll start charging your MC/VISA. The
features look very nice. It comes with MANX 3.6, which among other
things includes new startup code, which will allow a program to be
RUN from the CLI, and then Endcli that CLI :-)

* Dale Luck has the "basic" X-11 server running (no xtoolkit or xlib yet).
These will probably become shared libraries and one will be able to
run multiple X screens. There will be support for Ameristar ethernet
cards and SLIP. It will probably be distributed initially with the
	Ameristar boards.

* SYNDESIS seems to have found a good market doing exchange programs for 3-D
animations programs. I understand that they sold over 1000 units for
Videoscape<->Sculpt and are now working on supporting other programs
	(forms-in-flight, etc...).

That's it, for now. Thanks to all who stopped by at the OXXI's booth a said
hello. We hope you'll soon see Digi-Weather at a TV station near you.

Once again, it's so strange Marco. I waited for a posting for
AmiExpo, and just when I posted, guess what cropped up.

And once again, I missed you. Good to hear from you!

But, on the good side, it seems we compliment each other in
reporting these events.

I have been reading about this a way back. Could you elaborate on
Digi-Weather for all us terribly uninformed?

The '020 card that can use 16-bit memory effectively brings up something:

Are there any memory boards available that are jumperable for 16/32bit?
