I have just started using my new UDS-212LP modem, and am posting my comments, as promised. For 1200 baud dial-in use, I think it's the best modem on the market for the money. It's about half the size and 1/3 the weight of a regular 212A (minuscule next to the ugly GDC 212s). It has a single "talk/data" switch on the front, an "on-line" LED, and an "originate/answer" switch on the back. (The modem will NOT auto-answer, so it's not useful to have it hooked to your computer; ie, it won't answer the phone for you.) There are only 3 connectors on the back: a 25-pin RS-232 "D" connector for the terminal, a modular RJ-11C plug for the phone line, and another of these for the telephone set. The unit fits neatly under a standard desk phone, and the upper surface is molded to fit the feet on the phone (so it won't slide off). No transformer or other power supply is needed: the modem draws all its power (< 110 ma) from the phone line. The unit works at 1200 baud only, full-duplex, and is compatible with the 1200-baud channel of the Bell 212A. Mine worked right out of the box. No trouble so far. List price is $495. Discounts ($445) are available. Universal Data Systems (205) 837-8100. -- Jan Wolitzky
