[comp.sys.amiga] Palomax hard disk hackers package

blubaugh@ucqais.UUCP (Dwight Blubaugh) (02/04/88)

I'd like to hear from anyone out there that has built the Palomax HD kit.
For those that don't know what it is see What's new column in Jan Amiga
World.

Our Amiga club is going to build a bunch of these for club members. We
plan on also including an option for 2 megs of memory. What I'd like to hear
is problems and in general what things to do. We are going to do the kit
right and make real printed circuit boards. Also, is anyone currently
running this kit with a 68010 or 68020, I've heard talk that the interface
that Palomax does won't work with '010 or '020. Overall this looks like it
could be the perfect expansion for A1000's and A500's. If at all possible,
we will make our board compatible with A1000, A500, Zorro I and Zorro II.
Of course this means a weird looking board with lots of different possible
connections but still doable, I think.

Opinions are mine unless I bought them from someone.

ebr@io.UUCP (Evan B. Ross) (02/05/88)

I have built the palomax 'kit' and have been running it for about
six months now. I didn't bother building an enclosure for it, so
it just sort of hangs off the side of my 1000.

It only took a couple of evenings to put together (I could have done
it in one, but I was busy) and it came right up... no problems.

Their driver seems to be quite stable, and I've even received one
(or was it two?) unsolicited updates from them. My only gripe is
that the driver is not interrupt driven, so things get a little
jerky during heavy disk access. Then again I have a very slow
disk attached (80-90msec access), so who am I to complain?

The backup program they provide is nothing special, I've switched
over to using Fred Fish's BRU.

Bottom Line: Provided you're not afraid of electronics, and you can
get st506 drives cheaply, it's a definite win.
