[comp.sys.amiga] Dream Workbench

KEITHH@BNR.BITNET (Keith Hanlan, K.P.) (02/23/88)

I now know how the amiga workbench should look. If you have ever
quietly felt that the Amiga *looks* too much like a toy despite
its very serious functionality then take heart. For a mere CDN$1600
(roughly US$1100) you have to consider the Microways deinterlacer.

I had the opportunity to use a A2000 with a Mitshbishi
"multisync" (what is the generic term?) monitor and the
deinterlacer. With DropCloth, DropShadow, and MoreRows, this
setup is, bar none, *the* most impressive micro-computer display.
I can compare this to Apollos and colour MACIIs and colour Sun
workstations since this is part of the suite of over-priced
machinery I use at work.

Interlaced workbench was thoroughly readable and the perceived depth
is very convincing.

It is for products like these that we must applaud C-A's foresight
in adapting the much criticized NTSC standard. These changes are
completely compatible with anything you could throw at you Amiga.

I hope to see this technology succeed commercially so that
everybody can take advantage it.

I have to admidt, a friend of mine just got one of the first 3 units to
reach the public, and it is everything and more of what Keith said.
In standard 640x200 mode you get the black lines (the other 200) filled
in (things do sort of look blocky). But the white is *WHITE* and the
blue is *BLUE*. Just a solid sheet, beautiful. I sat down with a Sony
1302 and played with the horizontal and vertical size. Set more rows to
give me 85 column CLIs. I than turned on interlace workbench. I stretched
the screen so that a full CLI filled the screen exactly and found the
topaz 8 font to be perfect. So I had a 47x85 CLI or 48x87(?) VT100. What
a totally productive environment.

I wish I could put one in my 2000, anybody worked out the jumper connections
you need to make to hook this thing into the 1000? It has to be possible!

Ok, ok, Jim ("I'm in the market for a monitor") Mackraz pointed out that it
looked too much like I was saying my friend just got a 'Mitshbishi' monitor.

Point in fact, I was refering to the Flicker Fixer by MicroWay. And as I
sit at my crumby 200 line Amiga I really miss the ability to do the things
set forth in the previous article. Everyone will someday want one of these
boxes, just think, higher resolution than a Mac II (sans 19" monitor).

Oh, and as usual, if you too are in the market for a monitor for your Amiga,
I have to recommend Multi-scan monitors such as the NEC or the Mitsubishi
and especially the Sony 1302. That way you can always get the Flicker
Fixer later (or whatever other options come along...)

"This Roman Meal Bakery, thought you'd like to know"

hmmm... what's that from?
