[net.general] Indian Hill news blackout

pcl (07/02/82)

All netnews sites at Bell Labs' Indian Hill facility (Naperville, IL)
have been temporarily cut off from the rest of Usenet due to
communications problems with ihnss. After limping through most of the
week with just a trickle of news, ihnss finally buckled under today. We
are attempting to re-group, but probably have not yet achieved a stable,
reliable configuration. Note that there are approximately 43 Usenet
sites at Indian Hill.

When possible, mail should be routed around ihnss. To do so, it may
help to know that the ihux* machines can all exchange mail directly with
the houx* machines in Holmdel, NJ (among others), and that almost all
Indian Hill machines (ih*, iw*, ix*) can communicate directly with
one-another.

I don't know yet if it will be (or has been) necessary to flush any of
the messages queued for ihnss - I will try to find out. (The last that
I heard, there were over 700 (!) jobs queued on ihnss - a PDP 11/70 [*].)

I have been informed that it was necessary to flush over 900 items from
ihnss, in order to restore it to service. Most, if not all, of them were
netnews articles being distributed to other Indian Hill machines, but if
you have recently routed mail through ihnss, and don't know for sure that
it was received, try again. As I mentioned in the previous message, we
would appreciate routing around ihnss if possible, but if not, the
previous connections to/from ihnss should still work.
