[net.general] The truth about CSNET

solomon (07/04/82)

In response to an initial rather confused query in net.general, there
have been several excellent descriptions of aspects of CSNET.
Unfortunately, some have been in net.general and some in net.followup,
so you have to read both to get the full story. Steve Bellovin of
North Carolina wrote to tell about MMDF (which is a software
package--similar to delivermail/uucp--used to implement a part of
CSNET), Larry Landweber of Wisconsin wrote to tell more about CSNET in
general and how PhoneNet (and MMDF, which implements it) fits in, and
Mark Horton of Bell Labs, Columbus wrote comparing MMDF to delivermail
and sendmail (a possible successor). Let me put in my two cents by
assuring everybody that reprsentatives of CSNET are conferring with
Berkeley about the relationship of PhoneNet and the Berkeley mail
software. The plan is that 4.2 BSD will contain the necessary hooks
for CSNET access nicely integrated.

For the official dope on CSNET, write to Larry Landweber,
