[comp.sys.amiga] Workbench Wierdness

ralph@mit-atrp.UUCP (Ralph L. Vinciguerra) (03/11/88)

I've detected what seems to be a problem with the Workbench implementation.

If you have some workbench object on a RAM disk, and you "duplicate" it
from the menu, the workbench seems to grab ALL the available memory in the
system (ouch!), duplicate the object, and then free what it took.

I have noted this by having Dale Luck's "performance monitor" program running.
The Facction window will sometimes show it (if you coincide with an update).

This is very slow if your machine has several meg's of memory. Also, it locks
out any background processes who need to allocate memory.
If I use the CLI to duplicate, individually, the file and it's icon, this
does not seem to happen.

I hope that:
  A) I'm not misinterpreting what's happening
  B) That it is indeed possible to fix
  C) That it gets fixed in AmigaDOS 1.3.

Thanks for your ears (eyes?).
CBM folks: I realize this isn't serious enough to warrent immediate attention,
but a fix would be nice to include in the future...
