Does anyone out there in USENET land have much to say about running Unix on a VAX/11-730 ? I am interested in any comments (good or bad) concerning response time with many users, Franz Lisp limits, Emacs, etc. The configuration which is being evaluated is the Vax/11-730, using the R80/RL02 package with 2 megs of memory, an R80 Winchester Disk Drive (121 megs), the DMF32 Multifunction Controller, an RL02 drive (10 megs), and 12 VT100's. The proposed function for said machine is academic with most users playing either in Emacs or Franz. The anticipated number of logins at any one time is at most 10 students. Again, we are interested in any comments which you may have concerning the 730. Replies may be directed over the net to me via ucbvax|decvax|pur-ee|iuvax|bein. (I have found it is best not to use the "r" command.) Or if you prefer, reply via mail to either: Dr. Richard Salter c/o Dept. of Mathematics Oberlin College Oberlin, Ohio Attn:George Goldberg or David Bein c/o Dept. of CS Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana 47401 Your remarks, replies, etc. will be greatly appreciated.
